Our
Headquaters - Where We Meet
Our Group does
not currently have its own headquaters nor indeed any building.
It is a long-term project of the Executive
Committee to build or find a 'Scout Hut'. If you think you can
help with a permanent purpose-built Headquaters to accomodate the
whole Scout Group, or any funding needed to help with this project,
please contact us.
Our
current meeting place is our local school. For more information
visit their website.
This arrangement is not ideal
as we do not have enough room to hold some types of actvities. Our
only permanent storage facility is our small 'shed', pictured below.
Organisation
We are part of
the Scout Association of the United Kingdom. The Association is
organised into County, of which the Isle of Man is one. Most counties
are then split into Districts and then individual Scout Groups.
However the Isle of Man has no seperate districts but consists of
around 15 Scout Groups. The head of the Scout Association - Isle
of Man is therefore the Island Commissioner, Alan Teare.

| Our
Island
The Isle of Man
is part of the British Isles and lies in the Irish Sea, approximately
equidistant between England, Scotland and Ireland. It is approximately
33 miles long and between 8 and 15 miles wide with an area of 221
square miles. The island is home to around 76,000 people and has
its own language Manx, although no-one speaks this primarily. Hills
in the north and south are bisected by a central valley. The extreme
north is exceptionally flat and we only have one mountain, Snaefell,
with a height of 2,036 ft. The Isle of Man is a self-governing crown
dependency. The head of state is the Lord of Mann, HM the Queen
and she is represented by the Lieutenant Governor. Our parliament
is the Tynwald, which dates from 979 A.D. Offshore banking, manufacturing,
and tourism form key sectors of the economy of the Isle of Man.
The Island's symbol is the ancient Triskelion: three bent legs,
each with a spur, joined at the thigh. The three legs relate directly
to the island's motto — Quocunque Jeceris Stabit.

| Our
Village
Laxey is a beautiful
village on the east coast of the Island, between Ramsey and Douglas.
The village lies in a valley, running down from the mine workings
on the slopes of Snaefell to the harbour at the north end of a wide
bay. It is a popular tourist spot although the the biggest industry
the village ever had was the mines. Laxey is also famous for the
Laxey Wheel, the largest water wheel in the world and the Snaefell
Mountain Railway. The current population is around 3000.
