Bunkhouse Trip (1 August) |
Although not officially
a Scout activity, this was a day out for the older Cubs of both
packs. From the Vikings pack we had Warwick S, Alec C, Philip
B, Tom B, Duncan C, George E, Juan C, also Austen M from King
Orry and Connor C and Paul M who are ex-Cubs. The day was held
at the 2nd Onchan Scout Group Bunkhouse at Watertrough Cottage
in Foxdale. The boys were split into teams and competeted in a
series of activities including short unaccompanied hikes, shelter
building, bridge building, wide game, and a First Aid type incident.
Hopefully the Cubs gained some sort of an idea of what Scouts
is about!

move on to Scouts in September.

Annual Camp – Dhoon Glen (9-10 July) |
| King
Orry pack arrived en-mass again at Dhoon Glen campsite for two days
of Piracy and fun. Our theme was Pirates (obviously!) and we had
3 pirate ‘ships’ participate: The Jolly Rogers, the Buccaneers and
the Gruesome Girls. After setting up our ships accommodation on
the Thursday pack meeting (3 tents), we all came back on Friday
for some games and an exploration of Dhoon Glen with a campfire
barbeque and songs on the beach to finish the evening. On Saturday
morning after kit inspection we caught a tram to Ballaglass Glen
and met up with our Assistant Island Commissioner for Scouts (a.k.a.
Big Chief Skip Sir) and Nick Kinrade
for a morning or orienteering around the Glen. Everyone enjoyed
themselves and sung to everyone as we waited for the trams! After
lunch we invested 3 new pack members, all girls, into the newly
created Green Six. As tents were wet we played games in the bracken
until it was time to go home.

Island Cub Camp (18-20 June) |
| Leaders:
Akela & Chil.
Cubs: Alex Q, Alex B, Austen M, George B, Paul R, Kai M, William
B, Jodi G, Louisa B & Annie M.
We arrived at
Crossags on Friday evening and met with the Vikings
pack and all the other island packs. On arrival the leaders were
dismayed to find that the marque which they had put up the previous
evening had fallen over and a new one was needed. On Friday evening
the Cubs did a quiz and got settled in.
Saturday started
early for most of the Cubs with the annual football at 3am. When
the leaders got up it was breakfast and then tent inspection, which
we didn't do too well with. The main part of the day consisted of
a series of five bases, including kayaking and a blind fold trail.
The Cubs went round these bases in small groups of mixed up packs.
After tea, they made sedan chairs before singing around the camp
fire. The cubs went to bed slightly earlier than the previous night
- luckily for the leaders.
On Sunday, after
a better but awfully slow tent inspection, we watched a puppet show
for Cub's Own before the infamous Water Slide (which Stuart
and Nick from the other Pack also went
on - or should I say were pushed down). After this the tents were
taken down and the Cubs took part in a 'wide game'.

Night
at the Railway (13 May) |
| As part of the
150th Anniversary of the Laxey Wheel, the Mines Railway has been
reinstalled from the old washing floors to the mine entrance opposite
the fire station at Glen Moar. Most of the track was laid last year
but had become overgrown so on Thursday night we along with Vikings
Pack met to clear back the weeds and bushes so the trains can run.
There was a decent turn out of both parents and Cubs and the Cubs
managed 'to do their bit to help' as well as see the train actually
run!

Tour
of Douglas Harbour Master's Operation (24 June) |
We also were given
a tour of the Harbour Master’s operations by John
Clayton, Douglas Harbour Master which was very interesting.
Akela even learned that the plimsoll line on a ship has nothing
to do with shoes! (The plimsoll line indicates if the ship is overloaded.
Mr. Plimsoll was the politician that promoted the 1876 Merchant
Shipping Act requiring this line to be shown on all merchant ships).

In the
summer term 2004 we have worked on our Road Safety Badge. This together with the 2004 Island Camp and
King Orry Camps have enabled lots more cubs to earn their Outdoor
