Beaver Leaders to stand down |
Posted
By: JulieCretney 18/06/07 |

Having been Beaver Leader
since the beginning in February 1999, I feel it's time for Laxey
Beavers to have a change.
Edwin
and I wish to stand down at the end of this term, but will be
happy to support our successors up to Christmas. So..., now is
the time to be bold and get involved...
The more people involved
the better - ideally at least 4, many shoulders make light work....and
it's fun and rewarding!
It isn't necessary to committ
to Tuesday evenings - planning, accounts, letters and badgework
are jobs which can be shared. No previous experience necessary,
but enthusiasm, patience and a good sense of humour will help.
Basic training courses are avaliable and much help is online
and in manuals.
For more information ring
me on 862658.

Well
done to Flo, daughter of our Group Secretary, who has recently completed
a spell of 3 months helping out at Cubs for her Bronze Duke of Edinborough's
Award. Flo was a great help and the craft activity of making fish
she ran was a huge success. |

The present incarnation of 1st Laxey began in 1999. However it is
apparant that before this certainly Cubs was running in the village
in 60s. Below is a photo from 1964/65 of Laxey Cubs & Brownies
at Laxey School. The Cub Leaders are teachers, Jack Gair and Peter
Kniveton and the Brownie Leaders are Isobel Gorry and Betty Hotchkiss.

On Wednesday 19 July the Group held its 7th Annual General Meeting
at Laxey School, bringing to the end another successful year for
the Group. The meeting was a great success with all the reports
and the accounts being received by the meeting. The Council also
approved the nomination of Nicola Bowker
for GSL and her nomination of Nick Boon
as Group Chairman. The Group Treasurer and Secretary were also re-elected
for a further year. Unfortunately the turnout from parents and members
was extremely poor (no doubt due to the lovely weather) and thus
the roles of Cub and Beaver Parent Reps were not filled, following
Fiona Shimmin and Simon
Haddock's standing down from the Committee. Please see here
for more details on the roles of the parents reps. Cubs JosephC
and CharlieH also received the highest award in the Cub section,
the Chief Scout's Silver Award. The minutes and the section annual
reports are available for viewing below:

With just one Cub night left (the WaterBlast) and one fundraising
exercise in August, Akela's first term is nearly over so I think
we would all like to thank him for that.
The Cub Event
Reports will soon be completed for this term with the addition of
the pack camp photos and next term's programme will be released
in late August. This term we also say goodbye to Joseph, Charlie
and Mick. Thus the sixes
have been reviewed with Sam, Jake and Annie being promoted to Sixer
and William, Fynn, Frankie, and George gaining Seconders badges.

Results for
the Best Six and hence the Golden Woggle were announced at Camp
and the trophies will be presented at the AGM this Wednesday.
| Yellow Six |
1033 points |
| Red Six |
1028 points |
| Blue Six |
920 points |
| Green Six |
910 points |
| White Six |
828 points |
We have also
concluded the website survey and results will shortly be avaliable
as well as a brief resume at the AGM. These findings will be implemented
by September.

Congratulations to Charlie, Mick, Louisa, George, JoeC and Frankie.
Last night the Assistant Island Commissioner for Cubs came down
to see us and presented us with the trophy for the winning Six on
the Island Cub Camp. We won the competition jointly with 5th Douglas
and so will get to keep the trophy for 6 months. Well done! This
is only the 2nd time Laxey have won (Vikings pack won in 2003).

On
Saturday 24 June
2006 1st Laxey Scout Group took a stand at the annual Laxey
Fair to raise funds for camping and play equipment. A number
of activities were devised in order to generate interest and
raise the profile of 'scouting' in the village. A “Lucky
Dip” theme was prevalent as children were drawn to our
stand reassured by the fact that they would come away with
something. Naturally, a number of Beavers and Cubs were circulating
to assist parents with “forking out” extra pocket
money. One particular Cub, CharlieH, demonstrated a disposition
for sales and managed to attract some £20 of donations
to the stand. Well done Charlie!!
The attractions
for younger members of the local community were clear. For
the damp and stoic parents...

We
are pleased to announce today that King Orry Helper John
Clayton and retiring Beaver Parent Rep on the Executive
Committee Simon Haddock have
agreed to become fully |
|
warranted Assistant Cub Scout Leaders. The process will obviously
take a while but hopefully within 3 or 4 months they will
have their warrants. |
Obviously we
shall need somebody to replace Simon on the Committee
following the June AGM so if you are interested please contact Nick
Boon. Also we are still looking for more Beaver leaders, and
anybody willing to start up a Scout Troop.

The King Orry
Summer Programme is online here.
Previous Event
Reports for the Summer Term have also been started with the
photos of St George's Day Parade.

|
|
I have recently
recieved some photos of the Vikings
Winter Camp held at Ardwhallin in 2002. This was my first camp
with 1st Laxey so it outdates the involvement of all current members
and leaders (apart from Julie, Claire and I) but they are now there
for past members visiting the site.
These photos
were originally put on a website in 2002 but quickly removed due
to complaints about a photo of a Cub with an axe (now omitted)!

|
|
Just to clarify (after an enquiry), we do not bother to email or
post messages, here on the home page, about every update made to
the website. Emails are only sent half-termly and only major events/updates
are mentioned here. So for instance the King
Orry Event Reports
were in fact updated
with Thursday's pictures/news at some point last weekend and photos
have just been added to Beaver
Event Reports.

|
| Please
visit the website
of one of our former Chairmen Suzy Holland
and consider donating to her parachute jump in aid of the Multiple
Sclerosis Society.
|
| After
a quiet spell, the Executive Committee
of 1st Laxey Scout Group came up with an exciting, if unoriginal,
idea to have a disco for the local cubs and beavers. A date was
set and arrangements put in hand. Initial plans to have Tony Blackburn
as DJ and to be supported by live acts such as an Elvis lookalike
floundered after Nick Black
injected a little reality in to the situation by explaining that
loss making ventures would defeat the object of raising funds for
camping and play equipment!......

To read
the rest of this report and see the photos goto either the Beaver's
previous event reports
or King Orry's Spring
2006 Reports.

Joseph
C has now completed the IT3 Staged Badge online via this website.
He is the first to do so and badge 3 is designed for Scouts so he
has done extemely well to achieve it as a Cub. See his short article
about his rabbit here.
To complete
any of the IT staged badges 1 to 3 go here.
IT1 should take less than 10 minutes!

Congratulations to our team
of Joseph, Mick, Josephine, Jason, Louisa and Charlie who came
2nd in the Cub section of last night's fun swimming competition
in Peel. We were very unlucky not to win being 6 points ahead
of the 2nd placed team before the final event. However we ended
up losing by 1 point. See the results
for more info.

Huw
Warrington to be new CSL |
|
|
|
Huw
Warrington will take over a CSL of King
Orry Pack from April 2006. Huw (Bagheera) is currently an Assistant
Cub Leader and is taking over following Nicola's
change of role.
|
 |
Due to
the increasing demands of running a business the current CSL, Nicola
Bowker, is standing down as CSL but will continue to assist
King Orry at certain events. Nicola
|
has
also offered herself as Group Scout Leader, a position which has
been vacant since 2000. Although the Group
Exec and the Appointments Committee are yet to confirm these
appointments, it is hoped we will have a GSL again by the start
of next term. Nicola will be ideal in this role, having previously
been a GSL in Totternhoe, England as well as being involved with
Scouts and Ventures there.
Nicola set
up King Orry Cubs in January 2003, but had been living in Laxey
for two years prior to that. Her son was a Beaver at 1st Laxey from
February 2001 and when he was 8, the Vikings Pack was oversubscribed
so Nicola volunteered to set up a second pack with the help of Huw
and Mez. The Pack has thrived ever since
and we hope it will continue to do so under Huw.
|
 |
A reminder that this
coming Saturday is the Island Super Splash competition for
King Orry pack in Peel.
This
year's St George's Day parade will be held on 23 April at
Rushen Abbey. All members of the Group are expected to attend.

Treasurer
and Secretary not to seek re-election |
|
| |
At this years AGM,
Group Treasurer Gill Churcher
and long standing Group Secretary Julia
Trace will step down from the Executive
Committee. Gill has served as both a Parent Rep and
recently the Treasurer and Julia has been our Secretary
since 2000. The Group thanks both of these members for all
their hard work.

Resignation
of CSL Stuart Bridson and ACSLs Debbie Bridson & Martin
Caley. |
|
| |
This
evening Stuart, Debbie
and Martin resigned their Warrants
and left the Group. As a result the Vikings Cub Pack folded.
All three leaders have been around since the formation of
the Group and we thank them for their service. Group Secretary
Julia Trace and Group Treasurer
Gill Churcher presented all Vikings
Leaders with gifts on behalf of the Group. For more information
and photos see the Vikings
Previous Events 2004 page. |
|
|
|
| |
Tonight
Nick Kinrade, 18, was finally officially
warranted as an ACSL by Assistant Island Commissioner Anne Atkinson.
Nick has helped with the Vikings Pack since 2001 and decided to
apply for a warrant with us in Laxey instead of returning to his
old Scout Group, 2nd
Onchan. Congratulations to Nick! For more information and photos
see the Vikings Previous Events
2004 page. |

Please
see the below letter sent to all parents of members of the Group
and friends.
|

Mark
Bradley has today announced to the Executive
Committee his intention to stand down as Chairman and ACSL with
the Vikings. Until another Chairman is appointed at next year's
AGM, I, as Treasurer will chair meetings of the Exec. |

Update
on Scouts & the Building |
|
Following
last night's meeting of the Executive,
it is announced that the Scout Troop will in fact not be starting
in September and is on permanent hold. The proposed building of
a HQ for the Group has also been put on hold awaiting a feasability
study from Nick Black and Emma
Morter. |
|
|
|
Scout
Troop definitely (re-)starting! |
|
Following much work
by the Leaders and the Committee, there will be a Scout
Troop starting in September at the Christ Church Hall at
the junction of Church Hill and Captains Hill. We are working
very hard for our own premises but the Church Hall will
do for starters. We still need prospective Scout Leaders
to come forward, so if you think you can help or know of
someone who could help please get in touch. The Scouts will
initially be run with the present Cub Leaders. Letters will
be sent out during the Summer Holidays.
|
|
|
|
This
evening Vikings pack gained
2 more Warranted Leaders. Mark
Bradley and Nick Kinrade
were this evening both confirmed as Assistant Cub
Scout Leaders by the Island Appointments Committee.
Both have been regular helpers for a number of years.
Vikings now has a leadership team of 5. |
|
|
|
|
|
Today is the first meeting
of the newly formed 2nd Cub Pack. We are starting this pack due
to the fact that the existing Cub Pack is full and oversubscribed
and three new leaders have came forward. Nicola Bowker is to be
the new CSL. She has existing Scouting experience having being
a Group Scout Leader in England. Huw Warrington and Andrew 'Mez'
Merrick will be Assistant Cub Scout Leaders. I believe the Pack
already has 15 members.
