The Troop
is currently not active. The Troop was started in September 2000
but unfortunately closed in early 2002. We are looking to start
up the Troop again and thus require a new Scout Leader and as
many ASLs as possible, although existing leaders in the Group
would possibly transfer to the section or at least support the
new Leader.

Annual Reports
There
were no Previous Event Reports written in this time so below is
the reports given at the Annual General Meetings.
April
2001 - April 2002
As there
is no longer a Scout Leader, Suzy gave
a short account of the events Scouts have tried since the last
AGM. These included climbing at the climbing wall in Douglas,
meetings preparing for camps, map work, tracking and compass work.
A night hike was organised for the Scouts by Stuart
and other evenings included a taste and sense evening, blind trail
and other general Scouting activities. Scout Leader Claire Parry
is now helping out at Cubs and ASL John Large is no longer involved
with Scouting. Suzy concluded by saying that if in the future
the Executive Committee is in
a position to start another Scout Troop, then more help would
be needed from the Assistant Island Commissioner to avoid another
failure.
April 2001 - April
2000
Claire reported that Ist
Laxey Scouts was started in September last year with herself as
Scout Leader, Gary Cracknell and John Large as Assistant Scout
Leaders, and Jean Aksoy as a regular parent helper. John &
Gary have gained their Warrants since setting up the Troop and
Gary has completed his introductory training. The Troop started
with 16 Scouts and they spent six weeks on the Scout Law, Scout
Promise, World Wide Scouting and other aspects of Scouting before
they had a group enrolment where John Slark came down to enrol
Gary as an Assistant Leader. All 16 Scouts were then enrolled
and parents were invited along to see them take their promise
into the Scout movement. Many activities over the past eight months
have included a walk up Snaefell with Cubs, along with an enjoyable
afternoon at the Venture Centre in Maughold. Frank
Vaughan spent an evening with the Scouts showing them the
basics of map reading and compass work. A lot of this term’s
programme has been spent on compass and knot work and evenings
based around what to pack when going camping and camp cooking
with a view to camping shortly. Most Scouts have gained their
Artist badge during the last six months, which has been completed
both during the meetings and during their own time. Those who
attended the First Station visit, with a talk from the Station
Commander have gained their Fire Safety badge. A film evening
was held where the Scouts performed a short sketch using certain
phrases and items given to them and this was taped on video and
played back to them all later that evening. Chris Sharpe gave
a talk about the Manx bird atlas and the protection of birds on
the Isle of Man. Most Scouts have built themselves a bird box
and, together with other projects, have gained their craft badge.
It was unfortunate that the Troop was started during the winter
months which meant a lot of dark and cold evenings spent inside
the half and, due to the foot and mouth threat, the camp at Ard
Whallin had to be cancelled. However, with the light evenings,
the Troop is looking forward to enjoying a lot more outdoor activities.
Claire ended by thanking all the leaders who have helped set up
Laxey Scout Troop and all the people who have given them help
and support to get the Troop started.
